victoriafoundation.bc.ca/donate/hmcs-quadra-ron-schriber-memorial-scholarship-fund/Ron Schriber (1936-2022) is fondly remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather — and as a dedicated and deeply respected cadet leader.
Through the generous support of Ron’s family and former cadets, the Quadra Education Foundation (QEF) is pleased to announce the Ron Schriber Memorial Scholarship as a fitting and lasting legacy to honour and remember Ron’s contribution to the Cadet movement. It will be awarded to deserving cadets or adult staff who are pursuing post-secondary education in the field of medicine, engineering, environmental studies, or music. The QEF has established an endowed fund at the Victoria Foundation, one of Canada’s oldest community foundations, so the scholarship can be awarded in perpetuity. More than $25,000 has been raised to date. A Legacy of Service to Youth Ron grew up in Transcona – a suburb of Winnipeg, Manitoba – where he joined Sea Cadets in 1949 with Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps JOHN TRAVERS CORNWELL VC where he immediately joined the Band, playing trombone, and developed an interest in swimming and marksmanship. For summer training, he attended camps at Lake of the Woods, Ontario, and attended the first year of QUADRA in 1952. He played in the QUADRA Band at the Commonwealth Games in Vancouver in 1954. Ron continued his involvement in Sea Cadets, enroling as an officer in 1954. He later became Commanding Officer of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps ILLUSTRIOUS, in Toronto (Weston), Ontario, at the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. During his tenure he led various initiatives including the Duke of Edinburgh program which impacted so many young lives. He was also an associate with the Governor General Horse Guards (GGHG) and served as Commanding Officer of the Regional Cadet Sailing Centre at HMCS YORK and the cadet summer sailing program in Kingston, Ontario. When he retired, he continued to play in and lead many local bands. Ron attended the University of Manitoba, studying Electrical Engineering and began his career at the Canadian National Railway (CNR). He was later transferred from Transcona to Toronto, where he joined the Toronto Board of Education as Superintendent of Maintenance and later completed a Master of Education at University of Toronto. Ron Schriber enriched the lives of many cadets over the course of his life; a life well lived. QEF Board Michael Dailly said: “I am grateful to Ron Schriber for being such an important mentor and role model and I am pleased he will be posthumously honoured and remembered through a scholarship in his name. It is my pleasure to match the first $1,000 contributed by former ILLUSTRIOUS cadets and officers." Establishing a memorial scholarship fund in Ron Schriber’s name honours his legacy and continues to support cadets, adult staff, and the Cadet movement. We also thank Commander Paula McHale, Commanding Officer of the Regional Cadet Support Unit (Pacific), and Regional Chief Petty Officer First Class Mike Miller, for joining our virtual presentation ceremony on August 31. Congratulations again to all of scholars and good luck with your studies! The Quadra Education Foundation (QEF) is grateful to HMCS QUADRA alumnus Ben Whiting for creating a new scholarship to support students of science and engineering.
The Ben Whiting Scholarship, valued at $1000, will be awarded annually to HMCS QUADRA cadets, officers or alumni with a preference for those studying in a science and/or engineering program. Whiting attended HMCS QUADRA between 1970 and 1976, and completed the Boatswain course in 1972 at HMCS NADEN in Esquimalt, BC. As a staff officer, he served with the flotilla as a vessel XO and CO. His home corps was RCSCC FRASER, in New Westminster, BC, where he aged out as Coxswain and later served as a corps officer until 1979. “My time at HMCS QUADRA, plus HMCS NADEN, was very important to me. It taught me to have discipline, work with a team, but still seek adventure and challenge.” A graduate of the University of British Columbia, Whiting completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geological sciences before going on to doctoral studies at Queen’s University, where he served as an adjunct professor for 11 years in both the Geological Sciences and Mining Engineering departments. Whiting’s career in the mining industry has taken him around the world, and has led to recognition including Mexico’s “Explorer of the Year” in 2008, UBC’s Distinguished Science Alumnus in 2015, Knight-Chevalier from the Order of St. George, and life member of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. “The cadet program set me up well for having the confidence to take on many adventures and leadership as an Exploration Geologist in worldwide consulting.” Bravo Zulu, Ben, for your support and for continuing to lead by example. The Quadra Education Foundation (QEF) is grateful to HMCS QUADRA alumnus Ron Klein for establishing a new scholarship in honour of his family.
Klein served as a cadet in QUADRA between 1971 and 1977, as a trainee on the Officer Cadet Course in 1978, and as a staff officer between 1981 and 1989. His home corps was RCSCC ATHABASKAN, in Fort Saskatchewan, AB, where he served as a cadet and officer for 25 years, including two terms as Commanding Officer. Klein recognized early the value of post-secondary education. From 1977 to 1981, he held a variety of jobs, but found that without college or university, a career was impossible. So, in 1982, he went to The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton where he graduated in 1984 with a Diploma in Finance. He supported his education through his employment as a staff officer in QUADRA’s Administration and Training departments. Klein joined Revenue Canada in 1990 where he held several positions in the client services area until his retirement in 2018. “The reason that I have, and will continue to contribute to these scholarships is that I have both seen and experienced the setbacks of not having a post-secondary education. HMCS QUADRA allowed me the opportunity to earn the funds to get that education. They also provided me the the leadership experience to succeed in my career. It's time I repaid that debt.” The Klein Family Scholarship, valued at $1500, will be awarded annually to HMCS QUADRA cadets, officers or alumni who demonstrate strong leadership skills and community involvement. It is dedicated Ron’s family including his wife, Wendy (also a former cadet); their children, David, Kimberly and Tracey; and their two grandsons. Thank you to Ron and the Klein family for giving back and inspiring the next generation of leaders. The Quadra Education Foundation (QEF) thanks HMCS QUADRA alumnus Youssef El Deeb for establishing a new scholarship.
El Deeb served as a cadet in QUADRA between 1970 and 1973 reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His home corps was #RCSCCSCARBOROUGH, in Toronto, ON. The Cadet Program, and QUADRA in particular, had a major life changing impact on El Deeb when he arrived in Canada from Egypt in 1968: “I had only been in Canada for two years or less when I joined cadets. I spoke little English. I was lost in this new country and cadets turned my life around. The summers and the weekly meets during the winter gave me a strong sense of belonging, camaraderie and most of all: self-discipline." El Deeb went on to study fine arts at the University of Victoria and film at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson). He worked for the National Film Board then went on to direct and produce hundreds of TV commercials in the Middle East. He built the region’s first food network and sold it to Discovery. He is an award winning film producer and director. “QUADRA has impacted my life in so many ways, and these can be summarized in that well known QUADRA maxim about always only doing your very best as a bare minimum.” The Youssef El Deeb Scholarship, valued at $1000, will be awarded annually to HMCS QUADRA cadets, officers or alumni pursuing any post-secondary education program, with preference for a candidate who is an immigrant to Canada. Thank you, Youssef, for your generosity and for inspiring the next generation of leaders. The Quadra Education Foundation has several scholarships named in memory of HMCS QUADRA Alumni including Lt(N) Cynthia (Cyndi) Lawless (1972-2018).
Originally from RCSCC TAKLA in Fort St. James, BC, Cyndi served in HMCS QUADRA as a cadet in the 1980s and early 1990s, reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer First Class. She enrolled in the Royal Canadian Navy as a CIC Officer in 1991 and served until her passing in 2018. Cyndi was a passionate and inspiring mentor, coach, instructor, and leader for many cadets and officers over the years. Her memory lives on in all her knew her, especially her family. To learn about Cyndi’s life visit: https://www.mccallgardens.com/obituaries/cynthia-ann-lawless The Cynthia Lawless Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to an HMCS QUADRA cadet, officer, or alumni who demonstrates the same values and commitment to others that Cyndi did during her life.
